My husband and I have recently been trying to “do our part to protect the environment.” We separate all our trash for recycling, use those energy-saving light bulbs and biodegradable trash bags. We even use detergent that is good for the environment.
It’s nice that it’s so much easier to be good to the environment because more and more retailers and brands are starting to care. Supermarkets are also helping by charging to use plastic bags. I remember when I was younger we had to pay (I don’t mean in taxes) extra to have the city pick up our recycling. In Spain, where I now live, there are bins for organic materials, containers (plastics and metals) and glass. It’s a convenient and smart system.
So we were, naturally, praising ourselves about how good we are to the world until we brushed our teeth. We are only two, but we go through toothpaste tubes like nothing. That’s when my husband says: “Why isn’t there a more environmentally-friendly way to brush our teeth?” Meaning that we have all these plastic tubes (at least three in a month), so why isn’t there some Sam’s club type of bulk way to buy toothpaste? It could easily be put in one of those soap dispensers and it would not only be more economical but also better for the environment (adiós plastic tubes!).
Especially since it’s “cool” to take care of the environment, hence our patting ourselves on the back. I think the new retail step should be a more serious one towards protecting the environment. I’m definitely a fan.
