Hard to Come by or Abundantly Available?

According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, financial sector jobs were hit hard the last 12 months by the fact that nearly 9,000 financially-oriented firms closed their doors in 2009. The bureau further reported that over 153,000 financial companies experienced net job loses in the fourth quarter of 2009 alone.

That last figure represents 14% of the total number of financial establishments in the U.S. that exist both privately and at the local, state and federal levels of government. Put another way, looking at numbers like these makes it possible to conclude that financial sector jobs are experiencing a higher jobless rate than the total unemployment of every state in the union except Nevada.

Pretty sobering statistics, by anyone’s measure.

But if you are a financial professional who’s currently looking for new job, there are still plenty of opportunities. For example, at financialjobbank.com, there are currently over 68,000 finance and accounting jobs available. And those 68,000 financial sector jobs are not limited to CPA’s or former CFO’s, either. Instead, the site includes postings for everything from Plant Controller and Financial Services Representatives to Billing Coordinators and Property Accountants.

In addition to having a wide variety of financial sector jobs, financialjobbank.com is also a place where the opportunities are continuously refreshed. At the time of this writing, over 60% of the jobs were posted in the last 14 days, making financialjobbank.com one of the most fast-paced, dynamic resources online for finding accounting or finance-oriented employment.

Still, this year there is no shortage of predictions that foretell further doom and gloom for the financial sector. States like Pennsylvania and New Jersey have lost more than 2% of their financial-activities jobs in the trailing 12-month period. Wells Fargo announced this summer that it will slice 3,800 jobs, and additional cuts have been predicted for Credit Suisse and Barclay’s Capital.

But Wall Street is not the only place that employs financial professionals, and despite the cuts at larger firms, a quick search on Google for financial sector jobs reveals nearly 12 million hits and six finance job sites on the first page alone.

So even if it seems that financial sector jobs are scarce these days, one thing is certainly clear. The resources available online for finding such jobs are abundantly available, which effectively makes excuses far harder to come by than the jobs themselves.
