How to Transition Across Industries

In the past, people generally worked in one career for their entire lives. Today, workers are changing things up and switching industries midstream. If you want to take your business skills and move in a different direction in your career, here are a few tips for transitioning to a new industry.

  1. Research, research, research: The only way to know if your existing business skills will be useful in your new career is to research the industry. The Internet is an excellent resource for this task. You can find numerous websites providing all the intimate details about the entry requirements for various industries. Another option is to speak directly to people working in the field. They can give you an idea about whether or not your work experience and skills are relevant and give advice on what you need to do to make the change.
  2. Educate yourself: If your business skills and training won't cut the mustard in your new career, invest in building a new skill set that will. Depending on the field, this may require going back to school and earning another degree. In other cases, you can teach yourself what you need to know by reading books, attending workshops and seminars, and even working directly in the industry. The better you develop your new skills, the easier it will be to jump careers.
  3. Try it out: At some point, you will need to work in the field. Volunteering or completing an internship in the new industry is an excellent way to gain valuable experience while determining if you'd enjoy the work. In addition to getting your foot in the door, you can see firsthand whether your business skills will help you. If you're in school, speak to the college or university about internships/externships in the industry. Search job boards for opportunities to volunteer or apprentice under established professionals.
  4. Rework your resume: To get a job in the industry, you'll need to rewrite your resume to appeal to potential employers. If you've done your research, you should know the types of skills and knowledge required to get a job in the field. Write your resume in a way that highlights how your existing business skills fit the requirements of the job. For example, if you are moving from a marketing career to one in computer programming, show how your time management skills can help you get projects done on time.

Changing careers midstream is a challenge facing many people. However, it is possible to make the transition if you are willing to put in the time and effort required to upgrade your skill set. With the right type and amount of preparation, your business skills can help you land the job of your dreams.
