Retail And Healthy Living

Best Buy retailers announced in December that its stores would soon have a health and fitness focus. They plan to sell fitness clothes, electronics (such as watches and pedometers ), and gear (yoga mats, weights etc.). This move seems to be the new direction the retail community has been moving towards these past few years and want to continue well into the future.

The advent of Wii Fit and ipod applications like Nike Plus are focusing more on the health and fitness fads than ever before. There is an obvious advantage in these new additions as the consumer, who has always been weight conscious, wants its favorite shops and brands to move with the ever-changing times.

More people than I was aware have a Wii Fit or some other such platform. They don't want to miss out on this healthcare craze, while also taking advantage of gadgets they use everyday anyway. For the person who wants a more personalized workout they can soon easily browse the Best Buy website or local stores to shop fitness equipment. However, health and fitness is no longer limited to expensive machines or exclusive supermarkets and specialty stores.

Healthy food at affordable retail prices will soon be offered at Walmart stores. First Lady, Michelle Obama, helped spread the message that Walmart wants its customers to see its stores as a health and fitness entity just like Best Buy or Whole Foods. Walmart's new campaign is aimed at lowering the price of healthy foods (like produce) and lowering the unhealthy contents (like salt and fat) in its products. Basically, healthy food at affordable prices.

As a health and fitness "nut" myself, I believe these moves are great. It should be in retail where healthy living is promoted. Afterall, we spend most of our time absorbing much of what they tell us anyway.
