Color Theory

Looking to advance your science career? Surely you’ve studied lots of theories throughout your education but there’s one you might have missed that could make or break the interview for you – color theory. By acing the act of understanding color and the emotional effect it has on people, you can shape the perceptions of the interview while expressing your sharp style.

It goes without saying that you should wear a suit to each and every interview. What color suit and accessories you choose to show up in is the first peek into your personality that your potential employer has and it can shape their opinion before you even open your mouth. Take a look at some of these common color combinations.

Gray, Black, and White – Shows you are a drama free employee. You play by the rules and you get the work finished. This combo doesn’t invoke feelings of inspiration though. If you go this route try to find a tie with a texture or pattern that will show your subtle attention to detail. Black belt and shoes are your best bet for accessories because you don’t want to mix brown into this outfit.

Brown, Tan, and Green – Perceived to be worn by people who are down to earth and environmentally responsible. You don’t mind getting your hands dirty if it gets the job done because you care about the job you do. A drawback to suits available in this color scheme is that some of the styles can be very dated. Make sure you find one with a good fit so you don’t look sloppy. You’ll want brown shoes and a belt but make sure you find some that are elegant enough to add some high end style to your practical ensemble.

Navy/Khaki, Pin-Stripes, Yellow – Accentuates that you are approachable. You are an easygoing employee that is friendly and fun to be around. The potential drawback to this combination is that it can seem casual compared to other options. If you feel you need to dress it up, switch to matching navy blue pants and add a stylish tie clip. Brown shoes are best worn with the khakis or lean towards burgundy with the blue. Don’t mix navy and black though.

Black, Light Blue, Red – Sleek and classic, this combo says you’re a force to be reckoned with and on top of your game. The black suit is slimming and the red tie is powerful. Opt for a light blue over white shirt to set you out from the crowd and show off your patriotism. If daring enough try paring this with red shoes but only if you apply to a company that encourages creativity. Otherwise stick to a sophisticated look and wear with black shoes and black belt.
