USMC: Improvise, Adapt, Overcome

The Marine Corps is changing. It has been landlocked in Afghanistan and Iraq for nearly 10 years. Yet the Corps is always ready to deploy with maximum effectiveness, using their equipment to the fullest--long after its life expectancy.

No matter how you look at it, Marines have never veered far from one of their main legacy missions, which is to serve as America’s expeditionary force in readiness. As commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen James Amos noted, "Marines are a highly capable and agile force that is comfortable operating at the high and low ends of the threat spectrum.”

With Congress mulling over defense budget proposals, the Marine Corps stands firm in its mission as America’s readiness force. There's simply no denying that the Marine Corps has raised the bar when it comes to efficiency.

One example would be the Marines from 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Afghanistan who have embraced new green technology. Their expeditionary forward operating base is unlike anything used by any other government agency in Afghanistan. Power generators typically use more than 20 gallons of fuel a day. But thanks to solar power, they're down to 2.5 gallons a day. Saving fuel for generators has reduced the number of convoys and the opportunity for vehicles to be hit by an IED.

Stateside, the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twenty-Nine Palms, California generates 58 percent of its own energy through solar power. Other efficiencies being developed include a force structure review that will take into account all future fiscal and operational challenges.
