    PNNL is seeking a technical expert with strong credentials in cybersecurity and network engineering. The preferred candidate will have the opportunity to be part of a growing team that provides oversight and develops policy, standards, and specifications to our national security sponsors. The person needs to be a team player who is interested in growing the capability of the Lab as well as the capabilities in the junior staff on the project team. You will engage leaders across PNNL, government, industry, and academia to support program growth for our national security sponsors.

    Responsibilities

    PNNL is committed to researching and developing new technologies and methodologies by using rigorous techniques to investigate, validate and verify findings, and enable discovery of new cybersecurity solutions. In this position, you will bring technical expertise on different project teams that are focused on advancing cybersecurity tools and techniques. The candidate will participate on teams that will develop solutions for a variety of cybersecurity and cyber defense applications. To meet sponsor needs, these complex problems that must be solved through creativity, effective design, implementation, and teamwork. Active mentoring of junior and mid-level staff is an expectation and critical function of this role.

    Responsibilities include

    • Designs, deploys, and operates systems, networks, applications, and tools that support cybersecurity and cyber defense.

    • Able to integrate hardware, software, and other components to solve operational challenges for cyber defenders.

    • Perform data and network engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems.

    • Engineers and deploys security and defensive countermeasures and controls.

    • Executes security requirements definitions, systems analysis, systems design, security hardening, security test and evaluation, and certification and accreditation.

    • Supports operational systems and performs activities such as vulnerability scanning, network, and system security configuration, etc.

    • Design new approaches, methods and techniques for cyber defense and resiliency for information technology and operation technology.

    • May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence and other government organizations and agencies.

    • Developing and leading a cybersecurity project as well as mentoring other junior staff

    • Coordinate the scientific and programmatic aspect of your project and team.

    Also interested in staff with interest in performing one or more of the following

    • Designs and develops new systems, applications, and solutions for national security sponsors.

    • Investigates and proposes solutions to advancing tools and techniques for cyber defense.

    • Has wide-ranging experience in the cybersecurity field and uses that knowledge and experience to meet mission objectives, innovate, and solve complex challenges in creative and effective ways.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

    • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

    • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with telecommunications and IT systems.

    • Understanding of optical and IP networks.

    • Experience with systems integration, test and evaluation, installation and acceptance testing, and in-operation test and evaluation.

    • Familiarity with: RF, fiber optic, Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), Course and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM/DWDM), Optical Mesh and Reconfigurable Optical Add / Drop Multiplexers (ROADM), Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, Internet Protocol Routing and Switching, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), computing (Windows, Linux), storage, virtualization, cloud (private/public).

    • Wide understanding of current cybersecurity vulnerabilities and operational landscape.

    • Experience in design, development and implementation of countermeasures, cyber security systems integration, and manages tools specific to cyber security operations.

    • Responsible for understanding project requirements and decomposing them into achievable deliverables.

    • Experience in developing and presenting material to communicate project status and challenges.

    • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with clients and laboratory staff.

    This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

    • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

    • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

    Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
