  • Bemis Library has an opportunity for a part-time Librarian to join the division of Youth Services. The ideal candidate is passionate about library work and enjoys sharing a love of reading with children, teens, and families. The ideal candidate has experience working with youth from birth through grade twelve, is creative, stays abreast of current trends, and has experience planning and facilitating classes, outreach activities and events.

    The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for managing, designing, and implementing library programs and classes for youth from birth through grade twelve. This includes the youth summer reading program, giving library tours, teaching games and crafts, and assisting in patron learning, reading stories, storytelling, giving puppet shows, and performing related activities. Duties may also include selecting specific programs, contacting performers and making necessary arrangements, providing special set-ups, tracking attendance and hosting programs.

    Librarians provide expert and excellent customer service to library patrons, answer reference, technology, and reader's advisory questions, and instruct patrons how to use library services and resources, including print, electronic reference resources and digital content. Librarians select, order, and maintain materials for an assigned part of the collection. Librarians also manage the budget for assigned section and provide special services such as compiling webliographies, bibliographies and promotional flyers.

    This part-time position will work 30 hours per week and is eligible for benefits, which includes medical, dental, vision, and paid time off.

    Starting pay range $28.00 - $31.00 per hour

    This part-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

    Work Schedule: This part-time position will be expected to work 30 hours per week including some weekend hours and one evening shift per week until 8 p.m. The typical weekly schedule will consist of three 8 hour days and one 6 hour shift (including evenings and weekends.)

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manages, designs, and implements library programs and classes for youth from birth through grade twelve. This activity includes the youth summer reading program, giving library tours, teaching games and crafts, and assisting in patron learning, reading stories, storytelling, giving puppet shows, and performing related activities. Duties may also include selecting specific programs, contacting performers and making necessary arrangements, providing special set-ups, tracking attendance and hosting programs.

    • Creates and arranges displays.

    • Participates in outreach activities to preschools, day cares, and K-12 schools including summer reading promotion and literacy events.

    • Participates in library outreach booths at community programs.

    • Provides formal and informal training to patrons in the use of electronic resources including iPads, video gaming equipment, and other technologies.

    • Selects materials for the assigned portion of the library collection and maintains an updated, balanced library collection. Follows Collection Development Policy and applicable library and city procedures to purchase these materials.

    • Manages budget for section area; includes selection and deselection of materials and determining materials eligible for the bindery.

    • Participates in division staff meetings, and division planning, problem-solving and policy discussions. May participate in library committees to achieve strategic goals.

    • Compiles and curates web-based resources, webliographies, bibliographies and brochures using Publisher and/or Canva to assist in using the collection and accessing electronic information.

    • Uses reference interview techniques to determine patron's needs and provides the information or assistance required to satisfy the need.

    • Operates a personal computer with assigned software including the library's ILS and Discovery layer, the Internet, office software, and online databases.

    • Provides formal and informal training to patrons in the use of library resources, including electronic reference resources, digital content, public technology, and library equipment.

    • Assists and provides instruction regarding the use of patron's personal digital devices including computers, smartphones and tablets.

    • Conducts tours and presents information on library resources to community organizations and groups.

    • Manages, designs, and implements programs/classes. Promotes programs/classes via library website, newsletter, social media and other appropriate avenues. Tracks and reports statistics to supervisor. Prepares monthly report for supervisor.

    • Maintains daily order and safety. Consistently enforce library standards, codes of conduct, and library rules.

    • Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops to keep current with issues and literature.

    • May serve as Person in Charge.

    • Performs other similar assignments and projects as required.

    • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master's Degree in Library Science including coursework in young adult, and/or children's literature; and

    • Two (2) years of work experience in a public library with at least one year of that experience in young adult, and/or children's literature;

    OR

    • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bilingual skills and ability to speak and understand both English and Spanish.

    • Experience planning and delivering outreach activities and events for library patrons.

    • Experience with library purchasing processes and working with vendors.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

    • Expert knowledge of and ability to apply general principles and specific details of youth literature and youth programming.

    • Working knowledge of youth behavior, intellectual level, and interest level and the ability to apply general principles of youth library service, including expert knowledge of teen and children's books and authors, fiction books and authors for a wide variety of reader interests, with special emphasis on youth materials.

    • Expert knowledge of the principles, procedures and issues of public library operations and management; including safety and conduct.

    • Advanced project management skills and abilities.

    • Knowledge of basic budgeting, best practices and budget application within the library system.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

    • Work is performed indoors in a public library building environment. Work is performed outdoors in moderate temperatures on concrete, grass, or paved surfaces for occasional outdoor programs.

    • Work is performed standing; walking; and sitting. Requires: frequent lifting and carrying of books and chairs weighing up to 30 pounds; frequent pushing of book carts weighing up to 70 pounds with or without assistance.

    • The working environment includes occasional exposure to: dusts from books and other library materials; occasional exposure to poor building ventilation; and occasional exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards from computers and other library equipment.

    MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

    Personal computer, computer peripherals (printers, scanners, LCD projectors, etc.), and assigned software, iPad; telephones and photocopy machines; books, magazines, multimedia materials; microfilm reader, and an online catalog system; video gaming equipment, eBook readers, and alarm system.
